Demerara Rum
Monday, March 14, 2011 at 6:30AM Demerara Rums are rums produced in Guyana, and are made from fermented molasses. A common misconception is that the rums are made from Demerara sugar. This kind of rum gets its name from the former British colony of the same name that was in Guyana.
Tiare Olsen summarizes the history and characteristics of the rums on A Mountain of Crushed Ice. It is all — every drop of it — made by Demerara Distillers Limited. Other DDL brands include Belmont Estate and the widely distributed El Dorado. Drop by Smuggler's Cove in San Francisco and you may find private label Demerara as well.
